It builds a community for amateur basketball players to receive an enhanced game experience.
My Role In This Project
As designer and co-founder in the team, I was responsible for all facets of design from research to design execution. I also led the product strategy and addressed business opportunities. Partnered with three developers to bring concepts to life.
Start With Empathy
There’re 30 million amateur basketball players in China, however, the professional sport industry takes majority of public resources and attentions.
We wanted to challenge the inequitable situation for amateurs. To bring them an opportunity to enjoy better games.
Focus On Users & Impacts
We wanted to create meaningful impacts for amateur groups, and it had led us to more focus on the users. We designed product roadmap in the early stage, in order to remind us the goal throughout the journey.
Problems that Amateur Players Encounter
In the very beginning, I only focused on Playtime in order to enhance game quality. After testing concepts with users, we realized that it was a big failure since players didn’t want digital experiences to interrupt their physical fun time.
Rather than only focused on Playtime, I looked the whole journey and divided it into three phases. By understanding what players do, think, and feel in the whole journey, it helped me come out key problems that players encountered.
Introducing “Heat” Experience
Dive deeper with the insights, communication was a root cause of all pain points. By providing great communication opportunities, HEAT allows players to share, to team up, to compete, and to improve.
Know About The Court & Players
Check Players on the Court in Realtime
Quickly check how many players and who are playing right now. No more 1 person game or 1 hour waiting line, which was disaster experience for players.
Local Amateur Player Community
Easily communicate with players without privacy concern, quickly team-up to compete with teams, and easily share your story in the local amateur community.
Tournaments, Anywhere, Anytime
Start a local tournament anytime in the local park, and bring all teams together to “fight” for championships.
* Marketing & Managing Tool for Business
Business owners can start their tournament thru the App, which helps them setup games and manage teams easily. Heat also helps them gathering attentions from the right audiences - local sport lovers, effectively.
Improve Like An NBA Player
Peer Evaluation & NBA Player Template
Evaluate your teammates & opponents’ abilities after games. Encourage players to improve, and to engage with each other after games.
Heat recommends tutorials and nearby professionals to help players improving in a professional way.
Pass on to Amateurs the Professionalism
Maximize the influence of professionals, and bring benefits to both players and professionals.
Quickly browse prices and availabilities for indoor/outdoor stadium reservations. No more frustrating and calling.
Design for amateur players, our business, and the culture.
Find A Fit To The Market
We studied different kinds of product in the current market that helped amateurs experiences, and formed them in four categories. We were able to locate our product at the opportunity area based on the research, and it helped to guid our business strategy and design directions.
Prioritize User Groups
We interviewed more than 15 users and received over 200 online survey results. After analyzed the user groups, we prioritized them based on strong desires, frequent usage, fast spread, and potential spendings. It lead us to focus on the right targets with our limited time, to deliver great experiences.
Concepts And Directions
Visualize potential solutions in sketch form, to bring what experiences to what user groups.
Discussed with team about the functionality, and quickly checked with our fans group, start to structure content later on.
Broke down experiences to three stages as before game, in game, and after game
Prioritize Features To Implement
There’s a big lesson for me as a designer. I was pretty excited to present the whole concepts which were tested and proved with users to the team, and we all excited to build it to live. We realized that there’s no way to implement all designs at once, it will take forever to build, and also cause high risk with well-finished design in the very binginning which means a lot effort to revise if anything went sideways.
there’s no perfect experiences, no best designs, and no time for designers to deliver perfect product. It always about a better experience, a better design based on real feedback from users
- Information before games & in games
product think: sing players to team to tournament to community
developer perspective: existing code to estimate time to build to hardest feature
user experience perspective: most frequent used feature and pain point from heavy impact to improve experience
Surprise At Female Users
found female, stronger desire, in the meantime, lack of communication dna, make us want to update ui, result is two side, some users compalin lack of basketball element, but we believe in long term, it is a good direction and impacts.
